Mark Hartt
Mark began studying martial arts in 1991, with a focus on learning practical self-defence. Though most of his training has been in Kenpo Karate, he also has experience with a number of other systems.
Having worked part-time in the security industry since 1992, and full-time since 1996, Mark has seen the need for training that is both tactically realistic and legally acceptable. Since 1999 he has been with Mount Saint Vincent University, where he also sits on a number of committees as the security representative.
In 1996, Mark met Mary at Spirit Martial Arts. They have been together since 1998, and currently run Spirit out of a store attached to their home in Dartmouth.
In 2002, Mark took the PPCT Defensive Tactics Instructor course and was hooked. This was the kind of training he had been looking for. From there he also took PPCT Instructor certification courses in Spontaneous Knife Defence, GAGE (Ground Avoidance, Ground Escape) and SHARP (Sexual Harassment And Rape Prevention).
Mark has been contracted for the 2006/2007 academic year to teach Defensive Tactics to the Law & Security students at NSCC Truro. Courses have also been run for employees of various security companies, bar staff, DND/military personnel and martial arts instructors.
To supplement his teaching skills, Mark has attended a Train The Trainer course, with additional training/certification in the fields of Medical First Responder, Critical Incident Stress Management, Harassment Investigations, Labour Relations and Occupational Health & Safety. Mark also has a diploma in Construction Administration Technology from the NSCC.
